🌈 Can You Lick a Rainbow? We Just Did. (Don’t Tell the Cops)

What's New at Ava's

July 14, 2025

Hi Reader,

This week at Ava’s, we’re chasing rainbows—in our produce aisle, in our beer fridge, and maybe even in our hearts (awww). From Rainbow Veggies to a drink that practically glows, we’re all about eating and drinking the rainbow—without needing to decipher a single leprechaun riddle. 🌈

We’ve also got way too many local events coming up (check the end of this newsletter!)—great excuses to get outside, mingle, munch, and maybe accidentally join a conga line.

🥗 "Eat the Rainbow" (No, not Skittles) 🌈

The phrase "Eat the Rainbow" actually comes from nutritionists trying to get us to eat more than beige things shaped like French fries. It’s not new, but it gained popularity in the early 2000s, probably around the same time kale got a PR team.

The concept is simple: each veggie color = different nutrients, and the more colors you eat, the more your body thrives. It’s like making a mixtape for your immune system, but instead of K-pop ballads, you’re serving up antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber. (Fun fact: phytonutrients means “plant chemicals,” which sounds like something a supervillain would harvest, but they’re actually good for you.)

Examples? Glad you asked.

  • Red (tomatoes, peppers): full of lycopene, a heart-helper.
  • Orange/Yellow (carrots, squash): rich in beta-carotene, good for your eyes and possibly night vision. (Become the superhero you always thought you should have been.)
  • Green (kale, broccoli): bursting with vitamins K, C, E, and enough folate to make your nervous system gain self-confidence.
  • Blue/Purple (cabbage, eggplant): packed with anthocyanins, which help your brain and fight inflammation.

Now for the fun part—Ava’s has actual rainbow vegetables, including Rainbow Carrots (naturally colored heirloom varieties in purple, yellow, orange, and sometimes white, if they’re feeling shy) and Rainbow Chard, whose electric neon stems are basically edible glow sticks. 🌟 These veggies aren’t just pretty faces—they’re loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and the power to make your Instagram salad look like it went to art school.

And because we love you (platonically! …for now…), our produce is organic, meaning it’s grown without synthetic pesticides or chemicals that sound like rejected Pokémon. Plus, organic veggies often have higher nutrient levels, taste better, and—this is science—look cooler.

So come to Ava’s and build your plate like it’s starring in a Pixar short film. Your body will thank you. And if it doesn’t, just eat some purple cabbage and try again.

🥗 Cook the Rainbow! 🌈
Rainbow Noodle Stir Fry

You know those nights when your brain says “salad” but your soul whispers “noodles”? This is for those nights. Ava's Rainbow Noodle Stir Fry is what happens when ramen decides to dress up and crash a farmers market. It’s colorful, quick, and classy enough to make you feel like you definitely have your life together—even if you’re eating it hunched over the sink in pajama pants from 2009.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bundle ramen or soba noodles
  • 1 Tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 cup Rainbow Carrots, peeled into ribbons
  • 1 cup Rainbow Chard leaves, chopped (save stems for another recipe!)
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • Optional: 1 jammy egg, halved (for extra fanciness)

Instructions:

  1. Cook your noodles according to the package. Drain and rinse with cool water so they don’t stick together like long, starchy best friends.
  2. In a skillet, heat sesame oil over medium. Add garlic and ginger, sauté 30 seconds until fragrant (but not burned—your smoke detector does not need that kind of drama).
  3. Toss in carrot ribbons and cook 1–2 minutes until just tender. Add chard leaves and stir until wilted, about 1 minute.
  4. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, and cooked noodles. Toss to coat everything in golden, gingery goodness.
  5. Top with green onions, and if you’re feeling the vibe (we encourage it), plop a jammy egg right on top.

Serve warm or cold, in a bowl, on a plate, or straight from the pan like the beautiful noodle gremlin you are.

…and as always, you can find every ingredient you need right here at Ava's! Send us pics of your colorful creations; we'd love to see your beautiful mess creation!

🍻 Drink the Rainbow 🌈

You’ve mastered eating the rainbow—kudos on that technicolor salad! But have you considered drinking the rainbow? No, not by blending Skittles into your smoothie (although… hmm… be right back…). No, we’re talking about Almanac’s LOVE Hazy IPA, a brew so vibrant and juicy it might just make your kale jealous.

Crafted with Pilsner malt and rolled oats, this 6.1% ABV hazy IPA boasts a pillowy mouthfeel and is double dry-hopped with Mosaic, Citra, and Sabro hops, delivering flavors of mango, cantaloupe, and citrus . It’s like a tropical vacation in a can—minus the sunburn, weird tan lines, and regrettable keychains. And here’s a fun fact: despite its vivid taste profile, LOVE Hazy IPA won’t turn your urine wild colors. So, you can sip confidently, knowing your bathroom visits will remain pleasantly uneventful.

You’ll find LOVE Hazy IPA chilling in the beer section at Ava’s—back to the right when you enter. (That is, if you can somehow walk past Simply Sabor without looking down and suddenly finding a taco in each hand.) Cheers to vibrant flavors and colorful adventures! 🌈🍺
