You Only Have 60 Seconds To Host. Game On.

What's New At Ava's

July 26, 2026

Hi Reader,

The soccer watch party starts soon. Very soon. Your first guest is somewhere between "parking on Castro" and "already judging your empty coffee table."

You had weeks to plan. Technically months. Possibly an entire FIFA cycle. And yet here we are, standing in the kitchen with the tactical awareness of a confused midfielder and the snack strategy of a printer jam.

No judgment.

Well. Some judgment.

Because they're your friends, Sheila. Try a little.

Countdown Timer: 5 minutes

Five minutes is not a lot of time. It is, however, enough time to look like someone who owns a serving bowl on purpose. This is the moment for ranch dip, onion dip, guacamole mix, green onion dip, and every other noble packet that turns sour cream, yogurt, or avocado into a social contract.

The great American onion dip playbook is basically two moves: mix and chill. Lipton’s onion soup mix has been doing the dip/burger/meatloaf/roasted-potato thing for generations, which means it has survived more parties than most folding chairs. The Simply Organic and Spice Hunter mixes take the same general route: herbs, alliums, dairy or avocado, quick stir, instant snack-table legitimacy. Serve with chips and vegetables if you want to pretend there is balance in this match.

If you are thinking, “But what if people want something that feels like food?” congratulations, you have unlocked the second half of the five-minute plan: Yumbini. These are quick beans-and-rice style pouches, and the bags in the photo are doing actual work: Mild & Creamy, Smoky Chipotle, Cowboy BBQ, and Curried Turmeric. The package says ready in six minutes, but soccer invented stoppage time specifically for this kind of situation.

They are plant-based, high-protein, and built for the person who wants a warm bowl without performing kitchen theater. Heat a couple, spoon them into one big bowl, scatter chips around the outside, and suddenly you have “rustic watch-party nacho dip” instead of “panic beans.” This is not lying. This is hosting with VAR review pending.

Countdown Timer: 60 Seconds!

At sixty seconds, we stop pretending you are cooking. You are deploying. Isadora Mayocoba refried beans and BeanVIVO pouches are exactly the kind of thing you want when the match is starting, the couch is filling, and someone has already asked if your TV “always does that.”

Mayocoba beans are also called canary or Peruvian yellow beans, and they are prized because they cook up creamy while still tasting like beans instead of beige weather. In refried form, that means they are perfect for scooping with chips, spreading under salsa, or becoming the base layer of an emergency seven-layer dip that has, due to time constraints, become a two-layer dip with ambition.

BeanVIVO’s angle is even more direct: ready-to-eat bean pouches designed for a fast meal or snack. The Baja Black Beans keep it simple with black beans, onion, avocado oil, garlic, salt, and spice. The Three Bean Vegan Chili brings red beans, black beans, navy beans, tomatoes, plant-based chorizo seasoning, and a 60-second microwave promise. In soccer terms, this is a striker who does not need three touches. Open. Heat. Score. Point at the crowd like you meant it.

No Time Left!!!

Zero seconds. The door is opening. Shoes are squeaking. Someone has brought a beverage with no label. You are out of buildup play. This is route-one snack football.

Grab a container. Rip it open. Throw it on the table. Toss a bag of chips next to it. Everyone knows… or do they? When they see Yaza baba ghanouj or muhammara, and Yousef’s Gourmet hummus or spicy hummus, they’ll think you finally put thought into something. Baba ghanouj brings smoky eggplant energy. Muhammara, a Levantine red pepper and walnut dip, brings sweet, nutty, slightly tangy drama. Hummus is chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic, and the ancient wisdom that almost every party can be improved by a beige swoosh.

This is the beautiful fraud of good grocery shopping: the guests see dips, chips, and options. They do not see you ten minutes ago, standing in Ava’s with the focus of a goalkeeper during penalties and the cart control of a Roomba in your kids’ rooms. Maybe next time you will plan ahead. Maybe next time your snack table will have zones, garnish, and a tiny flag. Maybe next time the other team will win. Many things are theoretically possible.

Chips: Required

A proper party always has a bag of chips open. It is protocol. It is expected. It is how civilized people communicate, “Yes, this is a gathering and not six adults watching other adults play a game.” And these are the tortilla chips to get: not neon, not artificially colored orange, not full of mysterious ingredients that sound like sci-fi planets… just good, honest corn tortilla chips. Perfect for dipping, dunking, building a small edible retaining wall around the hummus, and throwing a handful at the TV when the other team takes a particularly dramatic dive.
