The World Cup is nearing the final whistle, and somehow we’re dehydrated. Some players ran ten kilometers; we yelled at a television and used tortilla chips to explain offside incorrectly.
They have trainers and neon sports drinks. You, on the other hand, have a secret weapon: Ava’s.
Kickoff: Team Bubbles
Tiny science timeout: carbonation is not just bubbles spanking your tongue. An enzyme in your mouth converts dissolved carbon dioxide into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions activate sour-sensing cells, which is why plain fizzy water tastes sharp. Your mouth is a tiny acid lab, and nobody signed a waiver.
Once humans bottled that sensation, they got theatrical. Tomarchio began in Sicily in 1920, delivering gassosa in wooden crates and marble-sealed bottles. Ava’s has its limonata, blood orange, and orange sodas made with protected Sicilian citrus. Lorina goes back to Victor Geyer’s 1895 French workshop and Vosges spring water. Its swing-top bottles preserved the fizz through winter and now open with a tiny French ghost whispering, oui, harder.
Then Texas enters wearing boots in the house. Dr Pepper was created in 1885 by Waco pharmacist Charles Alderton, who wanted to drink his drugstore’s mixed fruit-syrup aroma. The secret 23-flavor result actually predates Coca-Cola by a year. Ava’s has the cane-sugar version in glass: 23 flavors locked in a trench coat, refusing questions. Strong first half. Halftime: Juice-Box Youth League
Hydration is less strict than its publicist: water in food counts, supplying about 1/5 of Americans’ daily water intake. Your body will accept it from fruit, soup, and the cucumber slice abandoned beside a sandwich like a Victorian orphan: damp, but grateful.
That brings us to fruit, which Lakewood Organic made a family dynasty. Fred Fuhrman delivered fruit and juice to Miami Beach hotels; his son Thomas later pioneered Lakewood’s Fresh Pressed line. Today the third generation runs it. Meanhile, your family is still fighting over who took Grandma’s Pyrex.
The dynasty now fits in a soccer bag. Lakewood Littles Fruit Punch and Tropical Punch have no added sugar and only 35 calories per box. One tastes like an orchard joined a girl group; the other sends mango and pineapple on vacation with poor boundaries. Halftime handled. The final whistle, however, deserves stemware.

Final Whistle: Alcohol Gets a Red Card
Here is the hydration problem with alcohol: Vasopressin is a hormone that tells your kidneys to conserve water. Alcohol suppresses it, so your kidneys let more water escape… hence the extra bathroom trips. Giesen keeps the wine, but removes the owner trying to make your bladder team captain.
That solution came from Giesen. German brothers Theo and Alex planted a New Zealand vineyard in 1981, winemaker brother Marcel joined them, and their first vintage arrived in 1984. Three brothers crossed the planet to make wine. Your siblings have spent nine days choosing pizza toppings.
The Giesen 0% Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are not grape juice wearing a stolen blazer. Giesen makes full-strength wine, then uses a spinning cone to separate its aroma, alcohol, and body. The alcohol leaves; aroma and body reunite. The Chardonnay gets partial malolactic fermentation and French oak; the Sauvignon Blanc keeps its citrusy snap. Final whistle. Pour, make disturbingly-prolonged eye contact with a cheese, then savor the entire bottle, without the morning regrets.

Head to Civic Center Plaza and Mercy Street for cold treats, a live DJ, City booths, and a chance to see the inside of a fire truck or police car without ending up in a hospital or jail (this time).
