What's New At Ava's

Hi Reader,
America has been eating dessert for breakfast and lying about it for generations.
Pancakes are griddle cake. Waffles are cake with little syrup parking garages. Muffins are cupcakes that misplaced their frosting. French toast is bread pudding wearing loafers. Then there is cereal, which is often cookies served as soup, and the morning donut, which is a donut. We did not even bother making up a second name for that one.
We all know what's happening. Let's all stop pretending.
A bowl of sugary cereal or a morning donut would normally cause an insulin spike so high, your blood would be legally classified as syrup by the Canadian government. And they know a thing or two about syrup.
But you are an adult. You need protein to build and repair tissue, stay fed through the morning, and survive the moment someone schedules a meeting for 8:30… on purpose. So Ava’s found the loophole: the same ridiculous American breakfast desserts, now fixed (WITH PROTEIN).
Cereal: Candy Soup, Repaired
Traditional cereal is a bowl of toasted sugar shapes floating in milk… with marshmallows. The old nutritional strategy was to put a cartoon animal on the box, spray on some vitamins, and hope nobody asked why breakfast had turned the milk electric blue. By 10 a.m., you were hungry again and trying to remember whether you had actually eaten or merely watched six commercials about eating.
Ava’s fixed it (WITH PROTEIN).
Catalina Crunch Protein Cereal comes in Cinnamon Toast, Fruity, and Chocolate Peanut Butter. It has 11g of protein and 0g of sugar per serving, and is an excellent source of fiber. Done. Healthy. The toucan flew away in terror.
Founder Krishna Kaliannan started baking low-sugar cereal in his New York apartment after a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis and seven years of eggs for breakfast. He has described the early batches as “rocks that tasted like soil”. He kept going, even taking a weeklong cereal-making course at Texas A&M. This is what happens when an engineer gets tired of omelets.
The dense, ridged squares are engineered to fight sogginess. They stay crunchy in milk long after ordinary cereal would have surrendered and become paste for a baby with no teeth. Add fruit, use a higher-protein milk, or just eat it dry (when you don’t have the spoons to even wash a bowl today).

Donuts: Cake. Just… Cake.
A donut is cake that has been fried, dipped in sugar, and granted breakfast status solely because the shop opens early. This may be America’s most successful legal fiction. A Boston cream donut has pudding inside it. Eat the identical object after dinner and it is dessert. Eat it with coffee at 8:15am and somehow you are a hardworking citizen supporting a local business.
Ava’s fixed it (WITH PROTEIN).
Drumroll Glazed Donuts are baked in small batches and are plant-based, gluten-free, grain-free, and refrigerated. Ava’s has Vanilla, Chocolate, and (new!) Blueberry. Each pack of 2 has 10g of plant-based protein, 1g of sugar, and 4g of prebiotic fiber. Now it is a healthy breakfast. Grab a few refrigerated packs as you checkout.
Prebiotic fiber feeds the useful microbes already living in your gut. That is different from probiotics, which are the live microbes themselves. In other words, your bacteria get donuts for breakfast too, even though they contributed nothing to the carpool.
Eat them cold or let them lose the refrigerator chill while the coffee brews. They are still round, still glazed, and still excellent with coffee.

Frosted Cookies? We Gave Up Pretending
Frosted cookies for breakfast? Finally, some honesty. The old breakfast-cookie method was to add three oats, remove the frosting, and make the finished bar resemble compressed attic insulation. Quest looked directly at that tradition and brought back the frosting.
Ava’s fixed cookies (WITH PROTEIN).
Quest Bake Shop Frosted Cookies come in Strawberry Cake, Chocolate Cake, and Birthday Cake. Each packet contains two soft-baked cookies, so breakfast now has courses. Each packet has about 10g of protein, 1g of sugar and 1-2g of net carbs. That is nutrition. That is frosting. We have reached a settlement.
Eat one with coffee, dunk it in milk, or crumble it over plain Greek yogurt. If anyone asks why you are eating a frosted cookie before 9am, point to the protein number, do a little bicep flex, and continue chewing. This is how American breakfast law has always been made.
So yes, breakfast is dessert. It always was. Stop by before your walk down Castro, select your preferred morning cake, and start the day with one responsible nutritional decision presented in a deeply irresponsible shape.
