Which are you: Gloomy Goth, or Glowing Orange?

What's New At Ava's

October 25, 2026

Hi Reader,

Every Halloween outing needs two friends: the one dressed for a funeral (and who'd rather be at one), and the one glowing orange who calls everything “fang-tastic” until you understand why Dracula lives alone.

At Ava's, we've paired them up. Five goth foods. Five glowing companions. One side brings sharp flavors and sharper remarks. The other brings puns you wouldn't inflict on a door-to-door solar salesman. Come hungry. Leave with dinner and several new reasons to apologize.

Goth Garlic & Glow-Stick Carrots

Goth Black Garlic is playing The Cure in a dark kitchen when Glowing Carrot bursts in wearing six glow bracelets. “Time to TURNIP the volume!”

Garlic looks at the vegetable peeler. Looks at Carrot. “Bold opening for someone without skin protection.”

Under that dark exterior, the organic black garlic at Ava's is soft, sticky, and surprisingly sweet, with a tangy depth that makes butter considerably more interesting. It starts as ordinary garlic: controlled heat and humidity darken the cloves, with the Maillard reaction helping build that deep flavor. The same browning chemistry contributes to a good bread crust.

Carrots bring their own sweetness, especially roasted until tender with browned edges. Try this: cut a pound of carrots into roughly ½-inch-thick sticks. Toss with olive oil and salt, then roast at 425°F for about 25–35 minutes, turning once. Mash two peeled black garlic cloves into two tablespoons of softened butter, then toss with the hot carrots. Add strips of the orange pepper to the roasting tray if you like.

Sweet carrot, savory butter, little dark streaks of garlic. Carrot calls it “a roast to remember.” Garlic says the oven stole his opening material.

Black Beans & the Lentil Costume Crisis

“I'm dressed to KILL!” announces Glowing Orange Lentil, wedged into a pumpkin costume. “Legume guess. You're going as a bean again?”

Goth Black Bean hasn't left his soaking bath. “I'm going as someone who declined this invitation. Very difficult costume. Nobody respects the concept.”

Lentil's own costume comes with a naming problem: Pereg Orange Lentils are also known as red lentils. Their bright dry color softens during cooking, so expect a gentler golden hue in the bowl. “A HUE-dunnit!” she says. Bean lowers his head into a washcloth. “Somebody check the candy. She's been like this for an hour.”

Pair them with 1000 Springs Mill Organic Black Beans from Ava's for dinner before the candy expedition. Cook the dried beans separately until tender; the lentils cook much faster. For a cozy bowl, soften onion in oil, add cumin, then simmer rinsed lentils in broth until soft. Spoon the warm black beans over the top and finish with lime.

Creamy lentils underneath, earthy beans with a tender bite above: dinner before heading out onto Castro Street. Lentil promises it'll be “a gas.” Bean pauses. “Finally. A credible threat.” Maybe skip the shared broomstick home.

Black Bomber & the Disco Cheese

At the Halloween dance, Goth Black Bomber watches someone in a discount vampire cape grind against an inflatable pumpkin. “Centuries of culture,” he says. “And we arrived here.”

Glowing Amber Mist shimmies past in orange wax. “Looking GOURD-geous! Want to get into the spirit?” She brought whisky. It's in the cheese.

Both are Snowdonia cheddars, waiting at Ava's for an invitation to your snack board. Black Bomber brings a creamy texture and a big, savory cheddar bite. Amber Mist folds single malt whisky into mature cheddar, giving that richness a warm, spirited edge. Those dramatic colors are their wax costumes; remove the wax before eating. “Care for a little rind and grind?” asks Amber. Bomber stares. “It's wax. You're embarrassing both dairy and language.”

Give each a cracker and a little fruit spread: try dark raspberry with Black Bomber, or orange marmalade with Amber Mist. Sweet fruit against salty, rich cheddar keeps the next bite very easy to justify.

Amber Mist grabs a cheese knife for a microphone. “Sweet dreams are made of CHEESE!”

“I'm begging you to develop an unexpressed thought,” says Bomber. Big talk from a cheese who melts the moment he gets on hot toast.

Black Raspberry & Marmalade Brave the Haunted House

“Orange you glad I booked the haunted house?” asks Glowing Orange Marmalade.

Goth Black Raspberry surveys the cobwebs, cramped rooms, and figure screaming in the basement. “I've been to Mountain View open houses. You'll need to try harder.”

Back in a well-lit kitchen, they're excellent breakfast company. St. Dalfour Black Raspberry Fruit Spreadbrings a concentrated berry sweetness that holds its own against tangy cream cheese. Bonne Maman Orange Marmalade supplies bright citrus with a pleasing bitter edge. “I've got a-peel!” she announces. Raspberry unscrews her own lid. Anything to relieve the pressure.

Black Raspberry knows a thing or two about empty rooms: pick a raspberry and its core stays on the plant, leaving a hollow center. A blackberry keeps its core. “So you're hollow inside?” asks Marmalade. “Only since this conversation.”

Pick up both jars at Ava's. Spread cream cheese on warm toast, then give one half a dark raspberry swoop and the other a glowing orange stripe. The cream cheese softens the marmalade's bitter edge; the crisp toast gives all that sticky fruit somewhere useful to go.

From atop a warm slice, Marmalade shouts, “REST IN YEAST!”

Raspberry slides toward the darkest corner of the toast. “I was promised a haunted house. So far, you're the only thing that won't stop following me.”

Black Cherry & the Last Dance

Goth Black Cherry chose the horror movie. Glowing Orange Cream chose to spend its opening scene doing the Monster Mash between the couch and the television.

“I put the BOO in boogie!”

“You put the pause in a movie we've been trying to start since nine.”

Bring home Virgil's Black Cherry and Orange Cream sodas from Ava's and give them each a tall glass. Dark cherry sweetness makes a lovely partner for vanilla ice cream; orange cream takes that same scoop toward the sunny, creamy-citrus territory of an ice-pop truck. Orange dressed as a traffic cone so nobody would lose her after dark. Cherry tried. Twice.

Make two floats: pour chilled soda partway up each glass, gently add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, and leave room for foam. Air whipped into ice cream helps it float. Settle in while the scoop softens into the soda, leaving creamy streaks to chase with your spoon.

Divide the Halloween candy and grab a spoon. When a hockey mask appears at the movie's window, Orange cries, “Ice SCREAM!”

Cherry takes a long sip. “I'm rooting for the guy with the mask. At least he doesn't talk.”
